FAQ

What ambitious people have been asking us.

What can you expect from Discovery Week in Lisbon?

Up to two founders of each of the 10 selected startups will travel to Lisbon for a week of leadership training, networking opportunities and of course, great fun taking the best of what Lisbon has to offer. The main goal of this week is to promote a sense of community and to promote bonds between the founders and the Maze X’s team and advisors.

Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by Maze X. If travel restrictions due to COVID-19 persist during this period, the format will be adapted accordingly.

What can you expect from the acceleration phase?

Maze X’s acceleration phase will be conducted remotely and will last 15 weeks (from April 19th to July 30th).

The teams will receive hands-on customized support to tackle the main growth challenges they are facing. This support entails:
- Weekly one-to-one status update with the Maze X team
- Weekly group meetings amongst the cohort
- Individual expertise clinics with the experts and advisors
- Network connections and introductions
- Workshops and talks

What can you expect from the international roadshow?

The international roadshow happens in the months after the end of the programme. It entails organized cohort trips to European cities, with the purpose of allowing the founders to pitch their business to various investor and corporate networks throughout Europe’s biggest start-ups hubs.

In past editions, the international roadshow entailed the founders’ participation in Web Summit, GAN Summit and ChangeNOW.

The cities, conferences and dates encompassing 2021 International Roadshow are yet to be defined.

Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by Maze X.

What does the opportunity of testing a pilot with a corporate mean?

Our corporate partners will each choose one startup with whom they can partner to test an innovative solution internally in an area of priority to them. Throughout the 4 months, we will be working alongside with you and the corporate to ensure this process is as lean and successful as possible. We will help you plan, design and approve your pilot project, and define the best impact measurement strategy to better track the progress of your work.

If you’re selected for one of the corporate pilots, Ângela will become your new best friend. Read more about it here.

Is it mandatory to test a pilot with a corporate?

No, it is not mandatory to test a pilot with a corporate. We believe a corporate pilot is a great commercial opportunity to further develop the participating ventures. However, we will only encourage a corporate pilot if it will be a good fit for both.

Are the activities included in the programme mandatory?

Yes and No. There are sessions during the week that are mandatory, while others are voluntary and open to the community. However, the programme is structured so that founders have time to work on their business.

Where’s the catch? Does the programme have any costs for the startups?

There is no catch and no costs for the startups. All the customized support to each startup, including key activities such as expert mentoring, training modules or themed clinics are completely free.

The accommodation and travel expenses related to the Discovery Week in Lisbon and the international roadshow will be covered by Maze X.

Does MAZE / Maze X invest in the ventures?

Admission to the program does not result in direct investing in the startups. However, you will be in continuous contact with the team of our 50M € European Impact Fund – MSM Fund which may certainly bring you an unfair advantage, potentially resulting in a future investment.

Investment by the MSM Fund in Maze X’s startups is not guaranteed since the eligibility criteria between the accelerator and the fund are not 100% aligned.

Am I expected to move to Lisbon?

No, not at all. We do not expect you to move to Lisbon but expect you to pay us a visit and spend a few days in sunny Lisbon (during Discovery week). We promise it will be worth it.

The remaining dynamics of the programme will be conducted remotely.

However, if you wish to move to Lisbon (because of the unlimited reasons for a founder to wanting to do so), we offer you free co-working space in one of Lisbon’s coolest locations for nine months: Casa do Impacto.

Is it mandatory for the venture to be legally incorporated in Europe?

No, ventures are welcome to participate in Maze X even if they are not originally from a European country. However, our focus and added-value lies within the European impact ecosystem, so the venture should be interested in seizing opportunities in Europe.

How much traction is required for a venture to apply?

We are looking for ventures that already show some traction on their key metrics to measure success. These metrics can vary from venture to venture and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. However, having only an idea with no traction is unlikely to result in admission.

Can a one-person company be selected to Maze X?

No, if there is only one team member, you will not be selected for Maze X. In our experience, in order to ensure the growth and success of a company, it is of utmost importance to have a team behind a venture.

When is the application deadline?

Applications close on December 21st 2020.

I’ve applied and haven’t heard back! When will I get an answer?

Our team is working really hard on evaluating all the applications. We’ll get in touch in the weeks after the deadline.

Do you give feedback on application results?

We will try to give feedback to all the applications, but we can’t guarantee it.

What is your selection criteria?

We are looking for amazing teams that know exactly what problem they are trying to solve. The market opportunity of the solution needs to be clear, as well the business and impact models. We are looking for startups that have already some traction and proved their concept with their MVP. And finally, we want to choose startups that will benefit from being in the programme and to which the value of our help is real.

How does Maze X react to the Covid-19 restrictions?

If travel restrictions are in place by the time of the Discovery Week and the international roadshow, we will adapt its format accordingly. As the rest of the programme will be conducted remotely, we do not foresee significant restrictions in the following phases of Maze X.
